China Study Trip
Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant (ShiChaHai) Address: No.57 Di'anmen West Main Street, Xicheng District, Beijing Average price: CAD$40/person
Reasons to recommend: From the cultural perspective, roast duck is a traditional dish in China. If you are in China, this restaurant is a must go. For well over 100 years Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant has served up Beijing duck using their own recipe, which remains a closely-guarded secret. While some may gripe about the restaurant's ambiance. Its celebrated birds (CAD$40 per duck) have passed through the mouths of visitors from Fidel Castro to Richard Nixon over the years. Unique eating experience. Watch your kaoya (Roast Duck) being sliced before your eyes, then roll slivers of duck – famed for the layer of juicy fat which lies under a crisp golden-brown skin – in pancakes with shallots and cucumber. The skin has an interesting texture-porous, cookie-like and it bursts into a mouthful of buttery oily goodness that you will always remember. Try the skin alone, without dipping into any sauce, the original flavor will tantalize your taste buds and make you crave for more. Although there are must branches of Quanjude, the Shishahai one is where you can enjoy live performances every night, such as mask changing, magician performance, etc. The location is by the lakeside, and surrounded by many famous bars.
